Introduction:

These are a group of rheumatic diseases that share common clinical, genetic and radiological features.

Subgroups:

  1. Ankylosing spondylitis
  2. Psoaritic arthritis
  3. Reiter's syndrome
  4. Juveline ankylosing spondylitis
  5. Arthropathies of IBD

Common features:

  1. Predilection for inflammatory lesions of axial skeleton (sacroiliac joint and spondylitis)
  2. Enthesitis: Inflammation at bony insertion of tendons, ligaments and articular capsules.
  3. Oligoarticular peripheral joint arthritis
  4. Frequent extraarticular inflammation of eye, heart (aortitis), skin and mucous membranes.
  5. Strong association with HLAB27 and negative rheumatoid factor.
  6. Tendency to affect mainly young adult males (except in blind loop syndrome).

A DIAGNOSIS OF SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY CAN BE MADE IF THE SUM OF THE TWELVE CRITERIA VALUES IS AT LEAST SIX
